Engineered vs. Solid Hardwood

Both engineered and solid hardwood are fantastic flooring options. When choosing between them, consider these differences.

Construction

Solid hardwood comes from a single layer of natural wood. The thicker the wood, the more times you can refinish it. In contrast, engineered hardwood consists of many layers. A natural hardwood layer tops its core, strengthened by adhesives. You can sand and refinish engineered hardwood flooring, too, depending on the thickness of the top layer.

Installation

Engineered hardwood wins this battle. Multiple installation options make it easier to fit than solid hardwood. Installers can glue, float or nail engineered hardwood over the subfloor. Solid hardwood attaches to a secure subfloor with nails or glue. It also needs a climate-controlled installation environment, since it expands and contracts.

The good news is that our flooring pros are experts at installing both types of hardwood. Rest easy knowing your floors will look amazing and last for years to come.

Longevity

A well-maintained solid hardwood floor can last up to 100 years, giving it the edge in durability. Engineered hardwood has a shorter but still impressive lifespan of up to 30 years.

Applications

For more beautiful dining rooms, bedrooms, living rooms, hallways and stairs, choose solid hardwood. Engineered hardwood is king in moisture-prone spaces like kitchens or basements. Its resilience also suits high-traffic areas like hallways and entryways.

Textures to Express Your Style

Our hardwood floors come in an array of shades, textures and finishes to create one-of-a-kind flooring. Your texture choices include:

  • Smooth: Choose an untextured hardwood if you prefer a clean, uniform appearance. Smooth-sanded hardwood has no nooks or crannies, making it easier to clean.
  • Distressed: Intentional marks and scratches give the wood an aged, weathered look. Want that vintage aesthetic? Distressed hardwood is the answer. Its lived-in appearance adds charm and warmth.
  • Wire brushed: A hard wire brush removes the top layer of wood grain to expose the natural texture beneath. This treatment gives the wood a rustic feel.
  • Handscraped: Artisans use chisels or scrapers to make the wood look worn-in. This texture hides scratches, making it a good choice if you have children or pets.

Textures to Match Your Style

All American Flooring offers a wide selection of hardwood surface textures to match your interior's style.

Smooth-Sanded

This traditional texture is one of the most common. It offers a smooth, sanded surface ideal for bare feet and helps prevent dirt from gathering in crevices for easy cleaning.

Handscraped

This process involves using chisels or a hand scraper to recreate grooves that make the surface appear old and worn. It requires less maintenance and is suitable for homes and spaces with pets and children that may ding the wood with constant activity.

Distressed

Marks, scratches and dings are intentionally made in the wood to give it a weathered and aged appearance, adding character.

Wire Brushed

A hard-bristled brush removes the top soft grain layer, exposing the textured surface beneath. The natural grain patterns are enhanced for a distressed look.
